The Place of Medieval Guilds in Modern Day York
Graeme Robertson
Born and educated in Edinburgh, Graeme Robertson is a chartered accountant. He was commissioned in the Royal Air Force before two industrial appointments. He moved to York, where he now lives, when he joined an international management consultancy. His business career concluded as a director of a national outplacement consultancy.
He has contributed to public life as a member of a prison management board, a magistrate (deputy chairman of the York bench) and vice chairman of the North Yorkshire Police Authority.
Interests include York Association of the National Trust, voluntary guiding in York Minster and the Friends of Holy Trinity (a thirteenth century box pew church). As a founder member of the York News for the Blind he has been a monthly presenter for 37 years.
He became a member of the Guild of Scriveners of the City of York in 1991, and has been Master on two occasions representing his Guild in Yorkshire and elsewhere, and supporting the Lord Mayor in various aspects of pageantry and civic life.
Graeme will be taking a look at the role of livery companies and medieval guilds nationally, but especially how they developed in the City of York and their contribution to modern society.
